MARAD VESSELS (USA)

GMS was originally founded specifically to take advantage of the growing demand of ship breakers in India for vessels for demolition. The US Maritime Administration (MARAD) in Washington DC was a major seller of old American naval vessels for demolition. GMS was formed in 1992 to bid for these vessels. GMS’s aggressive pricing worked extremely well and in-spite of sharp competition, immediately became one of the leading buyers of MARAD vessels.

RUSSIAN NAVY VESSELS

In 1993, GMS was invited to bid for Russian Navy vessels. The effects of "perestroika" (free enterprise) were beginning to take place in Russia. GMS predicted that the end of the cold war between the USA and the former USSR would soon create a plentiful supply of old naval ships from there. With the assistance of the "Russian Office of International Trade" for the USA, GMS entered the Russian market in 1994.

GMS immediately gained recognition and credibility with the Russian Ministry of Defense (MOD) and between 1995-1997 purchased about 25 Russian naval vessels making GMS on of the largest buyers of Russian MOD ships in 1995 and 1996. With the help of exclusive representatives in key Russian cities, GMS quickly became a key player in the CIS commercial and fishing markets as well.

GLOBAL EXPANSION

Effective 1997, GMS pursued a global expansion policy. After about two years of hard work and a solid performance record, GMS gained acceptance by the leading shipbrokers and ship owners of the world. In 1999, GMS negotiated about 70 vessels. Starting in 2000, this record was quickly broken and every year since then, GMS has negotiated in excess of 100 vessels. In 2003, GMS delivered more than 125 vessels for recycling.
